Come Explore the
May Woods Nature Trails
Walk, Run or Bike
May Woods, a stunning 100-acre expanse donated by Virginia May of the Chamberlain family to the Mackinaw Area Historical Society in 2014, offers a tranquil retreat for nature enthusiasts. In 2024, a conservation easement with the Little Traverse Conservancy was established, further protecting this cherished natural area.
The May Woods trailhead is conveniently located in the southwest corner of Heritage Village near the Nature Center, with abundant parking available. During the warm months, trails are accessible via the Heritage Village Central Avenue entrance, while the Headlands Road Heritage Village entrance provides access during the snowy winter season.
With 10 trails spanning over 3.5 miles, visitors can enjoy hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing throughout the year. Designed for all ages, these nature trails wind through serene forests of hardwoods, pines, and cedars, showcasing native flora and fauna. Wildlife sightings often include deer, coyotes, foxes, rabbits, eagles, and hawks.
The trails are open to the public, local schools, and nonprofit organizations for recreational use, educational activities, and low-impact research projects. Additionally, May Woods provides seamless access to nearby trail networks, including the Headlands Trails, French Farm Lake Trails, and the North Country Trail, making it a hub for outdoor exploration.
